Believe it or not we get this question a lot. What is the difference between a pediatric dentist and a general dentist? Well for starters, a certified pediatric dentists must have two additional years of training beyond dental school. During residency, pediatric dentists focus on growth and development, hospital dentistry, sedation, behavior management and child psychology. Pediatric dentists are experienced in treating disease in infants through adolescents, they also work with any patients with special needs.

Pediatric dentists play a major role in educating both the child and parents on proper oral health. Providing a positive experience for the child and parent is top priority. Because the mouth is a gateway to overall health; education plays a vital role. According to a CDC report conducted in 2012, 27% of adults have untreated dental caries. It is important for us to create healthy habits in children that will continue through adulthood.

The most important difference between a pediatric and general dentist is that a pediatric dentist has to really love working with kids, even when they are upset. Performing a procedure upside down in a tiny dark space while keeping the child and parents at ease is not for everyone. Communicating effectively to parents and children is imperative to the overall experience, this requires patience and love for the field of pediatric dentistry.

At Children’s Dentistry, we strive to make every experience the best it can possibly be even when it’s difficult.
