Meet The Dentists
Here at Children’s Dentistry, we are dedicated to providing the highest quality care in a fun, kid-oriented environment. We have been in Westminster for over 40 years. We develop warm, caring relationships with children, teens and their parents.
Nelle V. Barr, D.M.D. (Dr. Nelle)
“Dr. Nelle is so nice to me when I come in!!! And a great dentist (: ” – Heather (patient, age 12)
Dr. Nelle knows that she has the best job in the whole world! She enjoys working with children, helping children and carrying on the family tradition. Her father and her great grandfather were both dentists, and now she and her sister, Dr. Betty, are both pediatric dentists.
Dr. Nelle was born and raised in Kentucky. She moved to Colorado in 1993. She and her husband, Larry, both enjoy biking, bird hunting and snow skiing. They are pet crazy and have three dogs and one cat. Dr. Nelle is an avid Rockies fan and, of course, a HUGE UK basketball fan.
Dr. Nelle received her dental degree and her pediatric dental certificate from the University of Kentucky. She is a Board Certified Pediatric Dentist. She is a past president of the Adams County Dental Society and the Colorado Academy of Pediatric Dentists. Dr. Nelle was a chairperson of RMDC 2014 and a past president of the Metro Denver Dental Foundation. In 2019 she will be the third female president of the Metro Denver Dental Society.
Sean Whalen, D.D.S. (Dr. Sean)
“Dr. Whalen is very nice and lets me watch movies!” – Cody (patient, age 7)
Dr. Sean Whalen was born and raised in Eastern Iowa. He and his wife fell in love with Colorado after being married in Glenwood Springs and now consider Colorado their home. Dr. Sean attended the University of Iowa for dental school and his advanced training in pediatric dentistry. He has been part of Children’s Dentistry for over a decade
Dr. Sean is active in the Colorado Dental Association and the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry; he is Board Certified in Pediatric Dentistry. Although Dr. Sean now considers Denver his permanent home, he will always be an avid Iowa Hawkeye fan. Dr. Sean and his wife, Brandy, live in Denver and enjoy an active lifestyle. Dr. Sean and his wife have three boys: Ewan, Holden and Emmett.
Grace Diehl, (Dr. Grace)
A native of Broomfield, Colorado, Dr. Grace Diehl earned her bachelor’s degree at the University of Colorado at Boulder and completed her master’s degree in Biomedical Sciences with a focus in allergy and immunology at Regis University. She attended the University of Colorado School of Dental Medicine where she served as class vice president and president of her school’s pediatric dentistry club. It was here that Dr. Grace realized how rewarding it was to work with children and guide them in developing healthy dental habits. After dental school, Dr. Grace received two years of specialty training in pediatric dentistry at Children’s Hospital Colorado.
Dr. Grace is married her husband Kyle who is also a dentist. They are huge animal lovers and the proud parents of a large dog named Hank and tuxedo cat named Tucker. In her free time, she enjoys trying new recipes, reading Reese Witherspoon’s book club books, gardening, watching movies, and exploring the outdoors!
Chelsea Shellhart, D.D.S. (Dr. Chelsea)
Dr. Chelsea Shellhart is a Colorado native. She is excited to be home again, and to be helping kids at Children’s Dentistry!
Chelsea received her dental degree from the University of Colorado School of Dental Medicine. After graduation, she completed a general dentistry residency program in Hawaii. She practiced general dentistry in Northern Colorado before deciding that she wanted to devote her career to children. She completed her pediatric dentistry residency in Yakima, Washington. While in residency, she was a fellow of University of Washington’s Leadership in Neurodevelopmental and Related Disabilities program.
Chelsea’s father is an orthodontist in Denver, and her grandfather is a retired dentist in Colorado Springs. She is glad to continue the family tradition of taking good care of people and their teeth! She excited to be back in Colorado and close to family and friends. Chelsea has a miniature dachshund named Beau whom she loves more than life itself! She likes learning to play the piano and spending time outdoors in the sunshine.
Dr. Darby Hammond Barfield (Dr. Darby)
Dr. Darby attended the University of California at Berkeley for undergrad. She went to the University of Connecticut for Dental School and finished her residency in Pediatric Dentistry at The Children’s Hospital in Denver Colorado. She has been an attending professor at the University of Colorado Dental School and the residency program at The Children’s Hospital. Dr. Darby has served as Dental Director for Dental Aid and donated time to Cavity Free at 3 and give kids a smile. She has made two medical mission trips to Peru and Mexico
She enjoys the outdoors, jogging, skiing, hiking, camping and spending time with her husband and two young children.
Dr. Mike Scheidt (Dr. Mike)
Dr. Mike Scheidt is a native Hoosier, graduating from Indiana University School of Dentistry and receiving his specialty training in Periodontics at Walter Reed Army Medical Center. He is a Board Certified Periodontist, practicing dentistry for 46 years and in his specialty for 40 years. Dr. Mike has taught Periodontics in multiple residency programs over the years and loves to talk about gums. He has been on the board of the Metropolitan Denver Dental Society since 1999 and served as President in 2010. He and his wife Kathryn have 4 grandchildren to which they cannot devote enough time. He likes to cycle and talk to people who like to fish.
Elizabeth S. Barr, D.M.D. (Dr. Betty)
“Dr. Betty is so nice and gentle with kids like me. She tells you what she is going to do. She is the best dentist!” – Karibe (patient, age 10)
Dr. Betty started Children’s Dentistry in 1977, even though she recently retired, she will remain apart of our family. She graduated from the University of Kentucky College of Dentistry and decided to continue her commitment to children by completing the post-doctoral program in pediatric dentistry at UK in 1976. She moved to Colorado in 1977 and started this practice, Children’s Dentistry.
She is Board Certified in Pediatric Dentistry and has been recognized as a Fellow of the American College of Dentists, honorary membership in Omicron Kappa Upsilon and elected as Director of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry from 1989–1996. She has numerous publications in dental journals.
Dr. Betty and her husband, Dr. Don Kleier, are active in the outdoors. They love to bike, backpack, fly fish and backcountry ski. They also love UK Wildcat basketball.
