We have chosen the 2018 scholars

We have selected three recipients for our Dr. Betty Barr Scholarship for Higher Education. With over 65 applicants, the selection process was a challenge! But after weeks of reviewing and deliberating, Samantha Pichler was awarded the top Scholarship of $5,000. Additionally, Lauren Lawless and Adam Chehadi were both awarded $1,000 scholarships. All three students will be attending college or schools of higher education in the fall of 2018.

The Dr. Betty Barr Scholarship for Higher Education is an annual scholarship awarded by us each year. . The scholarship was created as a way to honor of our founder, Dr. Betty Bar, after her retirement in 2015. All of our current patients who were high school seniors were encouraged to apply for the scholarship. They were asked to write an essay demonstrating their ability to show integrity, perseverance, and hard work.

“I read every single submission numerous times, and what it boiled down to was how each scholarship recipient dealt with adversaries to achieve their goals,” said Dr. Barr. “Every single applicant was incredibly deserving of the scholarship award, but ultimately, there were three that stood out based on the criteria we put forth.”

Congratulations to the winners! If you have an incoming senior, be on the lookout in April for the 2019 scholarship announcement.

2017 Betty Barr Scholarship Winners

We are pleased to announce the 2017 winners of the Dr. Betty Barr Scholarship for Higher Education. We had so many amazing essays submitted that it was difficult to choose. It was so difficult that this year, we chose two winners and split the $1,000 scholarship in two.

The first 2017 recipient of the Dr. Betty Barr Scholarship for Higher Education is Dane Gunderson, of Broomfield, Colorado.

Dane attended Broomfield High School and excelled in Track and Field, as well as Football. He is attending the University of Wyoming in the fall and hopes to pursue a career in medicine.

The second 2017 recipient of the Dr. Betty Barr Scholarship for Higher Education is Shay Ward, of Westminster, Colorado. Shay has been admitted to San Diego State University and is headed there in the fall.

Congratulations to the 2017 winners. We are proud of you and look forward to seeing you in the summer when you come back from college! If you have a child that will be graduating in 2018, keep your eyes peeled for a call for essays next March.

We are not kidding about mouthguards

Whether it be football, baseball, hockey, boxing, lacrosse, wrestling, volleyball or any other sports your children may be involved with, we want you to understand the importance of mouthguards. Believe us when we tell you that we have seen some horrific mouth trauma as a result of a sports-related mishap.

We all know that accidents can happen and we want your children to be as safe as possible. Mouthguards work by cushioning the blow of any contact that may occur during sports. They can protect your children from chipped, broken or lost teeth, lip and cheek wounds, and jaw injuries. It is even more important that children with braces wear mouthguards to protect from broken brackets or other appliance damage.

We recommend that you purchase a boil and bite or stock mouth guard which you can easily find online, at a local sports store or pharmacy. The boil and bite style mouth guard will give your child a better protection over the stock variety because they are fitted to their teeth through the process of boiling water and allowing the material to mold the mouth. The entire process takes less than 10 minutes.

Remember, as, with anything that goes in the mouth, it is essential to keep the mouthguards clean. They need to be thoroughly brushed after each use, and stored in a container with vents to allow it to dry which will prevent the growth of bacteria.

A mouthguard is an essential component to sports safety, and we are happy to help you find the best option for your child. Please feel free to call our office to discuss your options. The health of your children’s teeth is our utmost priority.
